Departure - Gidgegannup

Our departure location was at Gidgegannup, departure being 9.00am. Pommy the last to show but that's ok as he was our trip leader, no one was going anywhere till Pommy privileged us with his presence.

After some informal introduction we were on our way through the windy hilly Toodyay Rd, next destination being Wyalkatchem for a late morning tea. Goomalling was another railway town we passed but decided not to stop.

Pommy's trip was totally planned and executed with GPS - Magellan Meridian. Pommy, myself and Bronky all running off laptops as well. Waypoints, regions and tracks all being utilised via the GPS units and on the laptops.

No reccie was done prior to this 4WD trip and none of us had been out this way before so it was going to be an interesting exercise in terms of navigation.

We had Wizard with Lee in the 100 series and his mate Andy in the GU Patrol on his third 4WD with West Coast 4x4. Both guys and Lee were fantastic company and they were very patient with Pommy and I picking up waypoints along the way.

Our first POI was working our way up through some salt lakes, Lake Cowcowing on our left and Lake Wallmbin on our right and then following a railway line heading basically in a Westerly direction.

Heading down a typical gravel Road and me being tail end for Pommy... an extra reference point for Pommy, I noted a 4WD track heading into some kind of creek bed off to the right. I got onto the radio and said to Pommy ' lets do a bit of exploring down here mate', so we did.

Still a fair few wildflower in and around this great little drive out the in the middle of nowhere.

Pommy - relief!

And how's this? A dunny out in the middle of the sticks, running water, toilet paper... just amazing to see such a well maintained toilet in the middle of the nothing. Pommy had to take a closer look.

Damn flies

IMG_0696.jpg

Wizard finally giving into the flies - yeah, them sticky little annoying bush flies that think everyone's their friend. They were in plague proportions and sort of prevented us setting up a camp early, getting into some beer o'clock time and nibbles'.

The first campsite we looked at had a heap of potential, we way pointed it for future reference.

Manmanning Dam

Now there was a dam in this nature reserve somewhere, so a decision was made to try and find it. We might even be able to go for a swim and get away from these annoying flies. Almost doing a full circuit of the reserve we found it but not a drop of water. The dam was in a dilapidated state, be interesting to know the history of such a structure and why it was built on the edge of a nature reserve.

Took a bit of a deviation to Dingo or Dog Rock - depending on which map you look at - had a good look around and Aaron found a Gnamma Hole on the rock, very much reminding me of the rocky outcrops on the Holland Track.

IMG_0732.jpg

All and all it was a great trip, very relaxing and the GPS systems worked a treat, I don't think there was a POI out there that we missed. We made Wongan Hills for morning tea and then moved onto New Nocia for lunch at the monastery.  We remained on schedule perfectly over the whole weekend, arriving home just after 2.00pm, plenty of time to give the trucks a wash and get the dust off and of course... throw this trip report together.

Again, great company, great campfire and a great exercise in navigation via GPS, loved it. Enjoy the pics ;-)
